A messenger from another star system. ʻOumuamua crossed our Solar System, swept past the Sun on 9 September 2017, and reached roughly 87.3 km/s near perihelion before heading back into interstellar space.
The Hawaiian name is often translated as “a messenger from afar arriving first.” Discovered by Pan-STARRS1 in October 2017, it became the first known object officially classified as interstellar.
